Get Ready to Have Loads of FUN!

LONE STAR CONFERENCE 2008

October 25, 2008

Are you having trouble getting past the partial submission? Want to make agents and editors ask for a full? The first step is to impress them with those first five pages. Encourage them to keep reading through chapter one to chapter two and beyond. Impress them with your writing skills. Our speaker, National Best Seller, Pat Kay will help you achieve your goal with her two part series of “The First Five Pages” and “Scene and Sequel.”

Patricia Kay is the USA Today bestselling author of forty-seven novels of romance and women’s fiction.  Over the past eighteen years, more than two million copies of her books have been sold in nineteen different countries.  A RITA nominee for her first mainstream romance, THE WRONG CHILD, in 2000, she has garnered rave reviews, not just for her engrossing, family-oriented fiction but for her top-notch online writing classes and in-person workshops and presentations. Her most recent Special Edition, THE BILLIONAIRE AND HIS BOSS, (January ’08) spent three weeks on Bookscan’s Top 100 list and three weeks on the Walden list.

Throughout her career, Pat has given writing workshops all over the country.  In addition, for several years she taught creative writing at The University of Houston, Cinco Ranch.  She says she loves to teach, that there’s nothing more satisfying to her than seeing that light bulb go off in a student’s head.
A resident of Houston, Pat is married, has three children, and three grandchildren.

The First Five Pages

In today’s tough publishing climate, you’ve got to hook your reader immediately, and there’s no more important reader than the editor you hope to persuade to buy your book. In this segment of the program, we’ll discuss how to choose the right kind of opening for the story you want to tell, how to convey enough information to keep from confusing your reader without giving too much away, and how to make sure your reader will want to keep on reading.

Scene and Sequel

The fundamentals of scene and sequel seem to be among the hardest techniques for writers to grasp, no matter their skill level. Learn the basic principles of story construction using scene and sequel, including how to make your scenes compelling and exciting, how to choose point of view, how to keep a seamless story flow with the right kinds of transitions, how to pick up or slow down the pacing and more.

AGENT PANEL AND APPOINTMENTS

In addition to a dynamite speaker, sure to charge your creativity, this conference also offers a short agent/editor panel on Saturday morning and appointments throughout the rest of the day with Michelle Grajkowski of Three Seas Literary Agency, Becca Stumpf of Prospect Agency, and Carolyn Grayson of the Ashley Grayson Literary Agency. Check out their websites for more information.
